2019 Roussanne
RED MOUNTAIN AVA
Our 2019 Roussanne is a very restrained vintage, requiring some time in the glass before whispered aromas of Asian pear, chamomile and kiwi can be coaxed out. Although energetic, it glides effortlessly on the palate without excessive weight, carrying welcoming cucumber and green apple flavors on a very Old World structure. This vintage shows hints of lemongrass, satay sauce and lime zest, making it a fantastic pairing with Asian food.
Bearing the name inspired by its russet-colored skin, Roussanne is one of the few noble white grapes that can retain natural acidity and crisp structure nurtured under our beloved Red Mountain sun. This is an aromatic wine full of juicy lime and honeysuckle blossom showing both vibrant and delicate qualities free from any oak intervention. As a single vineyard wine from the famed Ciel du Cheval vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA, the distinctive mineral complexity is the foundation of every vintage.
"Overall, white wines coming off Red Mountain, as this Roussanne does, are somewhat unusual, given the area’s consistently warm temperatures along with the high dollars that Cabernet Sauvignon can fetch. We see exceptions, primarily with Sauvignon Blanc, which makes this Roussanne a treat.I’ve written recently about the increasing quality of Rhône-style white wines in Washington, and the 2019 DeLille Roussanne is a terrific example of that. It’s intrigue is that it comes from a warm appellation but one that, like the rest of the state, saw a cool down in September. So it’s plenty ripe, with great breadth of palate and depth of flavor, but it also has terrific acidity. There’s complex aromas and flavors of apricot, and seashell, along with a textured palate and exquisite balance. It’s the highest quality white wine I have had from Washington to date, a true accomplishment."
